Candid Shots of the Housing Area

1. This intersection
would now be
the Yoyogi Park
Harajuku/Mejii
entrance plaza.
It is the area I saw
bulldozers and
gravel in May 1970.
2. Near Harajuku
Gate about 1962.
The 500 area is just
being closed off to
begin demolition.
Looking along
Chestnut toward
the BX (past
the commissary
and chapel which
cannot be seen).
Yoyogi St (and Mejii
wall) is to the right.
3. Yoyogi Street
is also to the left but
on the map that is
'E Sycamore'.
[Perhaps I am
disoriented. This is
the only possible
intersect between
Yoyogi and
Chestnut.]
4. The Chestnut St sign
is about where you turn
left onto Yoyogi St
to exit WH at the
Harajuku gate. (The sign
is diagonally across from
the bus stop where I
started my trip to NHS
every day!)

Note 1: Both 1 and 2 are the same intersection viewed from different directions.
Note 2. Both Street Signs are on the same sign post.

5. The Chapel destruction (on left) is looking toard the same intersection as pics 1,2,3 & 4 above, but a few years later and the intersection is gone. On the right is the Olympic Stadium built in the 500 area.

6. If the "last Remaining
House" is 256 or
257 it would be
just behind the
photographer, about
six Units away. Also near area in pics 1,2,3 & 4 above.
Photo From S & S Newspaper.
7. Disappearing into History. Note number 573 on picture.. 8. Not Sure Which Gate This is From . Anyone know?

Comment by Brian: The pictures are amazing for me. They are of another world--a world I took for granted
for 3 years that is now vapor. I was really shocked Mar '70 when I turned the corner from Harajuku and
found it all gone. It was like returning home from a long trip and discovering a loved-one had died. Here
we are looking at pictures of the funeral. Looking through the S & S archives four years ago was quite
an experience.

Another pictures appeared in the S&S 13 Dec 1962 with the caption, "A stack of bath tubs, water heaters
and other salvage items make the spot of the latest group of Washington Heights dependent housing units
fall before the demolition crews. The 500 area is being razed to provide space for the 1964 Olympic Games
in Tokyo.
